Barney Barnwell’s Legacy at Plum Hollow Farm

Welcome to our farm. We’re glad y’all made it! So, why do we call it Plum Hollow Farm—or simply “the farm”? To answer that, we need to tell you about Barney Barnwell. He was the visionary, founder, and driving force behind Plum Hollow Farm.

This land has been in the Barnwell family for well over 100 years. The family first grew cotton, then peaches during the time Barney’s grandparents, Burton and Myrtle Barnwell, worked the farm. Growing up in the 1960s, the farm was Barney’s absolute favorite place to be.

In the 1970s, while Burton and Myrtle were busy farming peaches, Barney was out with the Plum Hollow Band growing a different kind of crop. He toured with legendary artists like Asleep at the Wheel, Muddy Waters, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Paycheck, just to name a few.

Years later, when Barney was given the opportunity to purchase the farm, he jumped at it. While still touring the college circuit on weekends, he used part of the property during the week as an automotive salvage yard—or “junkyard,” as we call it around here. It was a business where Barney, his father Robert, and his brother Byron “Red” all found success.

Using the fruits of his labor from touring and the salvage business, Barney transformed the junkyard into the music venue we all enjoy today. Now, the farm grows some of the best homegrown entertainment on the planet.

Although Barney isn’t with us today, his hard work, music, stories, and perseverance are seen, heard, and felt throughout the farm. As you enjoy disconnecting from the world and getting out in the woods to let it all hang out, keep Barney’s wise words in mind: “Act like you been somewhere!”

Barney believed deeply that it is our duty to leave this Earth a better place than we found it. We can honestly say that when I step onto this farm, Barney hit the mark—and then some.

The Plum Hollow Motel

The Plum Hollow Hotel features 11 rooms, each representing a Southern state. Every room is designed with furnishings that honor the contributions each state has made to the rich and unique culture of the South.

We are currently decorating the rooms with woodcarvings made from trees sourced directly from Plum Hollow Farm, where the hotel is located. Barney did all of the carvings himself, many of them crafted with his chainsaw. While not all rooms are completed yet, you can view our progress as we continue working.

The Texas, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee rooms hold some of his most special carvings. We are in the process of restoring some of these rooms and will be showcasing updated photos soon.

Each room can be accessed by selecting the corresponding state flag located to the right.

To rent a room for the Plum Hollow Festival or Moonshiner’s Reunion, bookings are first come, first served.

Rooms are $100 per night and require a 3-night minimum stay. A valid driver’s license and credit card are required to reserve your stay. For more information or to book a room, please contact Missy Stanley, Event Coordinator, at 864-357-0222.
