Welcome to our farm. We’re glad y’all made it! So, why do we call it the Plum Hollow Farm or ‘the farm’? To answer that we need to tell you about Barney Barnwell. He was the visionary, founder, and driving force behind the Plum Hollow Farm. This farm has been in the Barnwell family for well over 100 years. The family first grew cotton, then peaches while Barney’s grandparents Burton and Myrtle Barnwell had the farm. As a child growing up in the 1960s, the farm was Barney’s absolute favorite place to be. In the 1970s, while Burton and Myrtle were busy farming peaches, Barney was out with the Plum Hollow Band growing their own crop, touring with artists such as Asleep at the Wheel, Muddy Waters, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Paycheck, just to name a few. Years later, Barney jumped on the opportunity to purchase the farm when offered to him. While still touring the college circuit on the weekends, he used part of the farm as an automotive salvage yard—or junkyard, as we call it around here—through the week, a business he, as well as his father Robert and brother Byron “Red,” were all successful in.

Barney, using the fruits of his labor from touring and the salvage business, turned the junkyard into the music venue we all enjoy today. Now, the farm is used to grow some of the best homegrown entertainment on the planet! Although Barney isn’t with us here today, his hard work, music, stories, and perseverance are seen, heard, and felt throughout the farm. While you enjoy the freedom of disconnecting from the world and getting out in the woods to let it all hang out, keep the wise words of Barney in your mind: “Act like you been somewhere!” He held a deep belief that it is our duty to leave this Earth a better place than we found it. We can honestly say that when I step onto this farm, Barney hit the mark—and then some.
